Major: Prospective Organizational Studies Major
Hometown: Rochester Hills, MI
Where did you transfer from? Loyola University Chicago
Why did you choose to transfer to the University of Michigan? Michigan is one of the only universities where you can have it all! I went to school in Chicago for a year and loved the cultural vibrancy of the big city, but Ann Arbor incorporates similar energy with the university vibe that I was seeking. I thrive on connection, and I felt immediately accepted and welcomed into several campus communities. Most importantly, Michigan is one of the only universities that offers my prospective major in Organizational Studies.
Based on your personal experience, what is the one thing you want to tell new transfer students? Get involved on campus right away during Welcome Week. Whether it’s through a TSC event or other orgs and clubs on campus, just get out there and find a community or organization whose mission speaks to you! There is really something for everyone here at UofM, so don’t be afraid to try out a lot of things!
How did you make friends and meet other students on campus? You don’t need to be a social butterfly to make friends! I attended a bunch of different events and talked to new classmates or people in the elevator at my apartment and made a connection with a friend of a friend and followed up with people I met at Transfer Student Day! I was very lucky that several of my professors structured the first week of classes in a way that created immediate connections where study groups + friendships were formed right away!
What is your favorite part about being an LSA transfer student? The transfer community. There are SO many resources for transfers within LSA, which makes it easy to find your community and create a great academic & social experience.
What do you know now that you wish you’d known before transferring to the University of Michigan? I wish I had known more about the housing options in Ann Arbor. I felt a little panicky that I would be stranded without a place to live if I didn’t decide immediately. If you’re transferring, make sure to take the time to look into resources like Beyond the Diag for finding off-campus housing, and do not discount the dorm experience if that is a good fit for you.
Why did you choose your specific major(s)? I hope to be accepted into the Organizational Studies program because it speaks to my love of collaboration and leadership development. I look forward to exploring how to foster a robust sense of community in workplaces and neighborhoods, and especially in institutions of higher learning! Community, culture, and connection are three Cs that I highly value, and that fit perfectly with this major!
