Major: Political Science
Hometown: West Bloomfield
Where did you transfer from? Oakland Community College
Why did you choose to transfer to the University of Michigan? I chose the University of Michigan because of the opportunities. Michigan provides the resources I would need as a pre-law student, such as the career center where I can receive individual help with course choices, LSAT prep, and UCAN; this will allow me to connect with alums as a pre-law student who dreams of matriculating to Law School following undergrad. Furthermore, the Michigan in Washington program will enable me to intern with officials and engage in research. In addition, to become a lawyer, I need to be firm in critical thinking, research, and writing. After thoroughly researching the University of Michigan and the coursework I would take, I was excited by the possibilities.
Based on your personal experience, what is the one thing you want to tell new transfer students? You are here for a reason! Take advantage of the opportunities that are available to you. It can be intimidating to transition to a substantial institution, depending on your previous academic setting. Attend the office hours provided to you by your professors and GSI. Do not hesitate to ask questions, as you are here to learn; no one knows it all. There is beauty in humility and seeking what is necessary to ensure optimal success. In addition, drown out the echoes of imposter syndrome, as at times, you may experience hardship, but that is all a part of your growth as a student and should not deter you from the intelligence that lies within. Finally, lean into the “unknown” and do not be afraid to talk to new people and form connections. Join that club/organization and put yourself out there! I often say, “Closed mouths do not get fed.”
How did you make friends and meet other students on campus? Talk! This sounds “cliche,” but talking to people allows you to find others with similar interests and form connections. I have also met people through events such as aMplify. Honestly, be yourself, and the right people will gravitate towards you.
What is your favorite part about being an LSA transfer student? My favorite part about being an LSA transfer student is having a support system like the LSA Transfer Student Center. The Transfer Student Center was one of the driving factors in my decision to attend this superb institution. The TSC guided me in the application process and ensured that I pursued the correct courses. I want to thank Transfer Recruiting Coordinator Darion Blalock, who inspired me to apply to this institution while pursuing coursework at Oakland Community College.
What do you know now that you wished you knew before transferring to the University of Michigan? That undergrad students can study in the Law Library is so beautiful. I began studying there recently. Also, I wish I knew all the events I should keep up with. It can sometimes be overwhelming, as I want to ensure I am taking advantage of the resources to aid my success.
Why did you choose your specific major(s)? I chose a major in Political Science as I knew that the coursework would provide the foundation necessary for my success as a lawyer. I do a lot of reading, writing, and analysis, which will benefit me in the long run.
