Major: Linguistics
Minor: Cognitive Science
Hometown: Lansing
Where did you transfer from? Lansing Community College
Why did you choose to transfer to the University of Michigan? Michigan checked everything off my list: a good school that was in-state and offered a linguistics program (which is pretty rare) – close enough that I could go home whenever I need, but far enough that I have to take care of myself.
Based on your personal experience, what is the one thing you want to tell new transfer students? Making friends might seem hard, but the Transfer Student Center is full of people as well as organizations and clubs are always doing something on campus.
How did you make friends and meet other students on campus? Clubs, living in the dorms for spring and summer classes, and the TSC.
What is your favorite part about being an LSA transfer student? Definitely the resources offered here, like community events with free food and a guaranteed spot to study in the TSC.
What do you know now that you wished you knew before transferring to the University of Michigan? The imposter syndrome is real and can sneak up on you when you least expect it. You might feel like you don’t belong and that's normal, but there are so many resources here to show you otherwise.
Why did you choose your specific major(s)? I’ve always had an interest in language, and as I got older I realized how little we truly understand about language and how empty we would be without it. I chose linguistics specifically because countless languages are projected to become extinct in our lifetimes due to dominance by global languages like English, Spanish, French, etc. I think there’s so much about language we have yet to understand and we wouldn’t be able to function without it.
