Major: Psychology
Hometown: Petoskey, MI
Where did you transfer from? North Central Michigan College
Why did you choose to transfer to the University of Michigan? I was really excited about the quality of the psychology program as well as how many doors are open to explore with a school as large and reputable as the University of Michigan. I also loved the incredible effort that the university puts towards making school accessible for all; I believe that education is a right that everybody should have the opportunity to access should they choose to do so. The University of Michigan makes that a priority, and I wanted to be a part of a school that I could be proud of.
Based on your personal experience, what is the one thing you want to tell new transfer students? It. Is. Possible. I never thought that I would have access to the kind of opportunities that were available at the University of Michigan, but time and time again I found myself surprised at how accessible, welcoming, and helpful everyone has been here. Don’t let yourself be too scared or too doubtful to explore this university as an option – you won’t regret it!
How did you make friends and meet other students on campus? I started by making class connections, asking people if they’d want to start a study group or a study group chat, meeting up with people from classes for coffee to go over material, and most of all, going to campus events! LSA is always putting on events for students to mix and mingle with students and faculty alike. Have some fun and make some connections while you’re at it!
What is your favorite part about being an LSA transfer student? My favorite part about being an LSA transfer student is the community. Between faculty and Transfer Student Advisors, there is no shortage of resources, kindness, and helping hands! It is a fear-free space; I never feel scared to reach out when I need it. A healthy environment goes a long way, and it’s easily my favorite part about being an LSA transfer student!
What do you know now that you wished you knew before transferring to the University of Michigan? Everybody really does want to see you succeed. Everybody that I have met is genuinely passionate about seeing you get what you need and go far.
Why did you choose your specific major(s)? During the pandemic I became the full-time childcare provider for my younger sister, who was two-three years old at the time. I became fascinated by studies about how children’s minds work and what methods/practices would help her grow. This was what led me to pursue psychology as a major, and was actually what swayed me to go back to school altogether!
