Major: Environment BA
Hometown: Royal Oak, Michigan
Where did you transfer from? Northern Michigan University
Why did you choose to transfer to the University of Michigan? I chose to transfer to the University of Michigan because of the abundance of knowledge and support that exists on campus. From professors rich in practical experience to extensive extracurricular activities, the University of Michigan offers endless opportunities to connect with peers and form meaningful professional relationships beyond academia.
Based on your personal experience, what is the one thing you want to tell new transfer students? One thing I want to tell new transfer students is to never say no to new paths. I know the idea of attending a Big 10 school can be daunting, but the University of Michigan and surrounding Ann Arbor area can be as big or small as you want. Don’t shy away from saying hi to classmates in lecture or just signing up for club newsletters. Put yourself out there!
How did you make friends and meet other students on campus? I made friends on campus by attending transfer student events and by talking to fellow Program in the Environment students during the professional fraternity rushing process and in lecture.
What is your favorite part about being an LSA transfer student? My favorite part about being an LSA transfer student is the welcoming atmosphere that greets incoming students from all walks of life regardless of where you are transferring from. LSA transfer students share a strong pride for our campus community and are always there to support each other.
What do you know now that you wished you knew before transferring to the University of Michigan? Prior to transferring to the University of Michigan, I felt chained down by anxiety about what if’s, including how I could ever make such a large campus home. I learned you have to be flexible and patient, realizing it's okay to be confused and reach out for help. That’s what campus resources are made for! I would urge my pre-Michigan self to not let opportunities pass me by out of fear of failure.
Why did you choose your specific major(s)? I developed a love for the outdoors from a young age, so I wanted to pursue a major that would allow me to honor my passion for nature and preserve it for future generations. The Program in the Environment (PitE) helped me pursue sustainability from the lens of urban development, allowing me to implement environmental science disciplines to city settings.
