Major: English
Hometown: Canton, Michigan
Where did you transfer from? Schoolcraft College
Why did you choose to transfer to the University of Michigan?
I chose to transfer to the University of Michigan not only because of the unmatched academic and professional opportunities that it offers its students, but also because I have always been drawn to its incredible sense of unity in diversity. As someone who belongs to multiple minority groups, it has not always been easy for me to fit in and feel heard in academic settings, but my classmates, coworkers, friends, and faculty that I have here at Michigan have made me feel right at home and proud to be part of such a diverse and welcoming community.
Based on your personal experience, what is the one thing you want to tell new transfer students?
New transfer students: You belong here. Being a transfer student and entering a brand new college environment can feel overwhelming, and it is normal to feel some imposter syndrome sneak up on you, but you have worked incredibly hard to get here, and you absolutely deserve it. Be proud of your drive and determination that has led you to all that you have achieved in becoming a Wolverine!
How did you make friends and meet other students on campus?
I met most of my friends on campus by attending campus transfer student events. Transfer Turfs — social events for transfer students that sign up for the Transfer Connections program — were very fun and welcoming, and allowed me to meet and talk with so many other transfer students in my year that I had a lot in common with. I ended up forming a small study group for one of my classes and going to football games with the new friends I made at these events!
What is your favorite part about being an LSA transfer student?
My favorite part about being an LSA transfer student is being part of the transfer student community on campus. There are so many more transfer students here than I thought I would ever meet, and there are also lots of opportunities for transfer students to attend social events to make new friends, join student organizations that provide support for new transfer students acclimating to campus life, and receive academic and personal support from campus resources that acknowledge transfer students and the adjustments that they are making as they transition into a new environment.
What do you know now that you wished you knew before transferring to the University of
Michigan?
I wish I would have known before transferring that there are so many other transfer students here at Michigan that are experiencing the exact same feelings that I felt when I first set foot on campus as a student. I was definitely not the only one feeling nervous in addition to my excitement to be at my dream school, and I was very glad to find out later when I was able to meet both new and more experienced transfer students that I was not alone!
Why did you choose your specific major(s)?
I chose English as my major because I have always had a passion for literature and creative writing. The University of Michigan’s English program offers valuable and captivating course material taught by brilliant professors that challenge students intellectually while allowing them to showcase their creativity. There are so many different courses here unlike any others, and as a student considering law school, I feel more and more equipped with the analytical and critical thinking skills I will need to successfully set me on this path every week.
