Peter Martel, Program Associate, American Friends Service Committee’s Michigan Criminal Justice Program.

At the age of 20, Peter Martel was arrested on charges of armed robbery and sent to prison.   After a failed escape attempt, he was sent to Michigan’s super-max prison where he served 10 years in “administrative segregation”—or solitary confinement.  He was released on parole in the fall of 2008. Today he is an attorney and Program Associate for the American Friends Service Committee's Criminal Justice Program in Michigan, advocating on behalf of prisoners in such areas as health care, mental health care, solitary confinement, programming and education, security classification, and staff misconduct.
