Intersecting D-branes and their low energy effective field theories have come up in many applications. For a particular kind of intersection, arguments from string theory require the existence of a magnetically charged soliton. However, this is not present in the low energy field theories that have been written down. To resolve this contradiction is an interesting puzzle in quantum field theory.
