DEPARTMENT COLLOQUIUM | Authentic Science Learning: REBUILD News

Wednesday, March 25, 2015
4:00 AM
340 West Hall

One theme which has emerged from the first year of REBUILD activity is the Authentic Research Design (ARD) model for lab classes. In this model, students in intro labs participate in authentic research - probing questions for which the answers are not known. In some cases (like Chem 216) the students develop the questions themselves; in others (Bio 173) intro lab students participate directly in faculty driven research. ARD labs are only part of this trend - traditional classes are incorporating more authentic science activities as well. In this presentation we will hear from several leading practitioners in our community, including at least John Wolfe from chemistry and Henriette Elvang from physics. Aaron Pierce and Tim McKay will provide a brief update about an emerging REBUILD STEM majors recruiting effort as well.
