Although the basic laws of evolution have been known for more than a century and there has been extensive mathematical work, little is understood quantitatively about the underlying dynamical processes. The talk will discuss some basic quantitative questions and challenges together with a summary of recent progress (from the viewpoint of a statistical physicist) on developing mathematical understanding of several aspects of evolutionary dynamics, including the benefits of sex and the development of genetic diversity.
