We present a new experimental scheme to modify the band structure of an optical lattice. In an admixed band, a novel quantum phase transition is identified from the observation of domains with ferromagnetic interactions. A careful study of the dynamics within a single domain suggests the appearance of roton excitations, which greatly suppress superfluidity near the quantum critical point.
