LIFE AFTER GRAD SCHOOL SEMINARS<br>Fuel Cycles and Fissile Material: A Life After Physics

Friday, April 12, 2013
4:00 AM
335 West Hall

Mark Goodman will describe his journey from physics to arms control
and points between. He received his Ph.D. at Princeton (working
with Ed Witten), took a postdoctoral fellow at KITP in Santa Barbara,
and then moved into science policy. He has worked on nuclear
nonproliferation issues at the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency,
the Department of State, and at the Department of Energy for
nearly 18 years. Over this period, he has worked on nuclear export
control and international nuclear cooperation, international verification
of peaceful nuclear activities, and responses to nuclear proliferation
challenges from various countries. Currently, Mark is senior scientist
in the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation at
the Department of State.

Dr. Goodman will talk about:

(1) proliferation risk assessment - a nonproliferation impact assessment he did at DOE in connection with the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership

(2) a possible Fissile Material Cutoff Treaty - a proposed treaty that is not yet under negotiation, which he has worked on off-and-on for ~17 years

(3) his career path since leaving physics.

Pizza and drinks will be provided.

Speaker:
Dr. Mark W. Goodman
