Speaker: Thomas O'Donnell (U-M Alumnus, The New School NYC)
Dr. O’Donnell will outline some of his recent work in global energy systems, their implications for U.S. foreign policy, and how physics graduates can impact such policy. Dr. O'Donnell is a nuclear physicist (Ph.D., U. Michigan, Ann Arbor), and an expert on the political economy of the global energy sector, especially of petroleum and its implications for U.S. geo-strategy and for OPEC states of the Middle East and Latin America. Dr. O'Donnell recently spent two years, 2008-09, in Venezuela studying its oil sector as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar and visiting professor at the Centro de Estudios del Desarrollo of the Universidad Central de Venezuela (CENDES-UCV). He has also been active in analysis of the petroleum-security nexus of the U.S.-Iran nuclear crisis, and of the role of China in energy matters both in the Middle East and Latin America. He now teaches in Graduate International Affairs (GPIA) at the New School in New York City, speaks widely on these issues and is writing a book on global energy policy entitled, “The One Global Barrel.”
Pizza and drinks will be provided.
