The Biological Station, founded in 1909, is the largest of U-M's campuses with 10,000 acres in the northern Lower Peninsula. Students and scientists from U-M and around the globe live and work as a community and learn about the natural world beneath the sprawling property's towering pines and along the shores of Douglas Lake.

The Biological Station exists on lands once occupied by the Burt Lake Band of Ottawa and Chippewa people. UMBS strives to incorporate the natural and cultural histories of the land into course content and public outreach activities.
