Family legacy is one of the lasting traditions at the University of Michigan, and one alum wished to pass his legacy on with a significant gift. Recently, the U-M Department of Political Science received a nearly $11 million gift from the Carl H. Urist Estate to establish the Carl H. Urist Sr. Professorship in Political Science. The gift will fund two professorship titles for tenured faculty who are devoted to the study of American political institutions. The professors will serve a five-year term, with the opportunity for renewal.
“We are deeply grateful to receive this generous gift from the estate of Carl H. Urist Jr. to establish the Carl H. Urist Sr. Professorship in Political Science,” said Rosario Ceballo, Dean of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan. “The College of LSA has long been home to world-renowned experts and researchers who have advanced our understanding of American politics. As we navigate large changes in our political landscape, I am excited to see how this gift will enhance our ability to identify, address, and solve some of the greatest issues impacting American political institutions.”
The gift is from the estate of the late U-M alum and New York City-based attorney Carl H. Urist Jr. He was a 1965 LSA graduate (A.B. Political Science) and named the gift after his father, Carl H. Urist Sr., who was also a U-M alum, graduating from the U-M Law School in 1933.

Urist Sr. Professorships in Political Science,” said Andrew Murphy, U-M political science department chair. “Cutting-edge scholarship on the emergence, development, and resilience of our political institutions is more important than ever. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the department and the college to identify leading scholars of American political institutions and bring them to Michigan to join our world-class faculty. The Urist professors will play a key role in advancing our understanding of how American political institutions function, and how they might remain robust and effective even in times of political uncertainty and unrest.”
Established in 1910, the Department of Political Science at LSA is one of the oldest departments of its kind in the country. It is home to more than 50 faculty, 120 graduate students, and nearly 1,000 undergraduate students, and is nationally and globally recognized for its many contributions to political science research and teaching.
