LSA Communications Researchers Discuss the Impact of Screen Media on Preschoolers

LSA doctoral candidate Jessica Moorman told Detroit’s WDIV-TV that preschoolers who spend too much time watching TV, playing video games, or using computers don’t get enough sleep—and that’s not good. Moorman co-authored a study showing that daily screen usage by kids ages two to five is nearly double the amount recommended for healthy growth and development.

Study co-author Kristen Harrison, LSA professor of communication studies, said the heaviest media users in the study probably have parents who are also heavy media users. This suggests that families should address sleep concerns for everyone in the household, not just the youngest children.
