The study looked at bee populations at sites in Detroit, Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor, and other areas. Despite previous evidence showing that urbanization is contributing to the decline in bees, at least one site in Detroit showed a bee population nearly equal to one in an Ann Arbor nature reserve. This discovery could help researchers learn about the factors that are contributing to the deline of bees, and how we might manage land in order to save them.

“In general, our results suggest that shrinking cities present unique ecological patterns and may offer avenues for research in sustainable city development,” said researchers.
