About
What is your advising philosophy? The goal of advising is student success. This, however, requires that advising go beyond simply helping a student select courses and interpret academic requirements. Rather, advising is a process of mentoring and relationship building – it is a way to help students develop both academically and personally. My philosophy on advising includes the following goals to foster student success:
Help students understand information regarding degree programs and university policies and procedures.
Incorporate of a variety of advising approaches based on the needs of each individual student.
Guide students toward resources that will not only help them academically, but will help them grow as individuals and develop a personal philosophy of life.
Develop an atmosphere of mutual respect in which students are able to direct their own academic development/progress as well as understand policies/procedures, their interests, and life goals.
Create an environment that encourages diversity and allows students to embrace their individual identities.
Provide understanding and support.
What was your path to Newnan? Before joining Newnan I was an associate professor of sociology and an administrator at a small liberal arts college in the UP of Michigan.
What do you enjoy about working in Newnan? I enjoy the people - both staff and students - and getting to engage with people from a variety of different backgrounds and educations.
Class you loved and why? My favorite class as an undergrad was a philosophy seminar entitled "Philosophy through Literature." It combined two areas that I loved, the professor was amazing, and we read texts that have stayed with me for years afterwards.
Interests and hobbies: Mountaineering, rock climbing, backpacking, snowshoeing, running, reading, and wrestling with my dogs.
