Student Success Advisor
About
What is your advising philosophy?
My advising philosophy is rooted in a holistic approach that values student success, cultivating a welcoming and inclusive environment, building meaningful connections, and being an advocate for students. Creating an accessible space and recognizing that mental health and well-being is paramount to the success of students in their collegiate journey and beyond is very important to me. I am committed to supporting students in achieving their goals and empowering them to be lifelong learners who are confident in their success in an ever-evolving world.
What was your path to Newnan?
When I was in my sophomore year at Eastern Michigan University (EMU), I was a New Student Orientation Assistant where I went through extensive university training and welcomed new students to campus during orientation. I was so sad when orientation was over because I did not want to say goodbye to working with students and welcoming them to the place I was so excited to call home. SO, I applied to be a Certified Tour Guide in the Admissions Welcome Center and let's just say, the rest is history. I discovered my passion and love for working in higher education from there! In my undergraduate career, I had various roles across campus in departments such as Admissions, Orientation, Alumni Relations, Housing & Residence Life, and Fraternity & Sorority Life. These experiences taught me so much about myself as not only a leader, but as a person. When I became a graduate student at EMU, I had the incredible opportunity of being a Graduate Assistant in the same office I was a tour guide! I also was an intern in EMU's Advising & Career Development Center and their advising center for the College of Arts & Sciences. After graduation, I was given the opportunity to be a Success Coach at Wayne State University in the College of Fine, Performing, & Communication Arts and this experience enhanced my skills as well as discover who I am as an advisor and what I value.
Why did you join Newnan?
It is evident in the work and devotion of the staff that they have created an empowering and supportive environment. The folx in Newnan are a collaborative team that greatly value student success and well-being and that also aligns with my values. I look forward to working with faculty, staff, and students!
Class you loved and why?
There were quite a few classes in my undergraduate and graduate career that I enjoyed but I really loved EDLD 553-Career Advising. My professor for the class was actually someone that really helped guide me in my collegiate journey as a student because she was my career advisor! I learned a lot about different advising techniques as well as personality assessments that can be beneficial in a workplace or educational setting. In this class we also had the opportunity to shadow advising appointments, do our own career exploration, and develop our own values and goals as advisors. Not only did this class teach me a lot about advising students but it taught me a lot about myself and my strengths.
Interests and hobbies:
I love exploring and being outdoors. My favorite outdoor activities are camping, hiking, backpacking, and kayaking and I try to do these as often as I can. I like to unwind by practicing yoga, reading, or listening to podcasts - I am always looking for book/podcast recommendations! I love going to music festivals and concerts, traveling/exploring new places, and going to football and hockey games. My love language is Quality Time so I also enjoy spending time with my friends, family, my partner, our dog Griz, and our cat Zorro. I am also a huge Swiftie (my favorite album is Reputation)
