A.B. Political Science, 1994CEO, Stretto
Jonathan Carson serves as Co-CEO and Chief Marketing Officer of Stretto, a legal-tech market innovator advancing the corporate restructuring and consumer bankruptcy industries with enterprise tools and case management support services. Spearheading Stretto’s expansion to promising new segments of the fiduciary market, Jonathan manages the market facing dynamics of one of the fastest growing technology businesses in the bankruptcy and insolvency industries.
A Chicago native, Jonathan began his professional career as a corporate-restructuring attorney with Kirkland & Ellis in the firm’s Chicago office. After two years of representing debtors, creditors and other Chapter 11 constituents, Jonathan and his wife, Stephanie, relocated to Los Angeles, California where he and Eric Kurtzman co-founded a bankruptcy-technology company focused on streamlining the administrative process for large corporate bankruptcies. After a successful exit and transition by way of sale to a public company, Jonathan and Eric teamed up with Stone Point Capital in 2017 to acquire Stretto (formerly Bankruptcy Management Solutions), a technology business focused primarily on the consumer-bankruptcy market. Today, after considerable organic growth and a handful of strategic acquisitions, Stretto operates four market-leading businesses in the bankruptcy / insolvency / fiduciary arenas.
While at Michigan, Jonathan developed his interest in the intersection of law and entrepreneurship but found limited opportunities to pursue a path that combined the two disciplines. Recognizing the challenges he faced during his own journey on campus, Jonathan spends considerable time today engaging with the LSA Opportunity Hub, helping to open doors for undergraduate students to pursue their professional interests by supporting the community of students, alumni, and employers.
Jonathan and Stephanie, his college sweetheart, live with their three children in Los Angeles. After attending the University of Michigan, earning a Political Science B.A. with distinction in 1994, Jonathan received his J.D. from Chicago-Kent College in 1997.
My four years in Ann Arbor as an LSA student transformed my life and opened my eyes to the opportunities available in the world for a driven kid like me. I trusted the system, jumped in with both feet (following two previous generations in my family) and I became a better person as a result. Michigan stayed with me during my continued higher education and then into my career, and I remain grateful for all that Michigan provided me along my journey. After several years on the Organizational Studies Leadership Committee, I was asked to join the DAC and again jumped in with two feet. We helped spark the idea for the Opportunity Hub, and then we supported the effort in seeing it through to its opening; today, we remain active in helping it thrive in the Michigan LSA community. We look forward to helping to guide the Hub and LSA forward, and to supporting countless students along the way as they lean on Michigan to provide them with the same opportunities we found during the early stages of our experience.
