Retired–former dietitian, former substitute teacher for math & science
Fran has a B.S. from Michigan State University in Research in Food and Nutrition. After working as a food service supervisor at Markley Hall, she earned an M.S. in Food and Nutrition from Eastern Michigan University and subsequently became a Registered Dietitian. She and her brother were the first in their extended blue-collar family to attend college, with the assistance of scholarships. All of her grandparents were immigrants to the U.S.
Before moving to Kalamazoo and having children, Fran worked in healthcare and community settings as a nutritionist. Her focus then shifted to working as full-time parent, part-time dietician, and volunteer. She was highly engaged in supporting her children’s activities, from softball and soccer coaching to fundraising for extracurricular activities.
Fran retired from substitute teaching about fifteen years ago. As a reflection of her commitment to education, and in preparation for her role as a substitute teacher, she took classes at Kalamazoo Community College and Western Michigan in higher math, computer science and engineering to be a more effective high school substitute for math and science classes.
Fran has been a lifelong sports and games enthusiast–now primarily pickleball and bridge—and is an avid gardener.
I have always valued education as a means to promote the well-being of the public. By being a member of the DAC, I appreciate the sharing of information in both directions as it makes being an ambassador for the university so easy.
