In connection with the theme of 19th- and early 20th-century collecting in Egypt, we will show the 1969 Egyptian film Al Momia or The Night of Counting Years by Shadi Abdel Salam. This film, restored by the World Cinema Project, recounts the 1881 discovery of a large cache of mummies near Deir al-Bahari in Egypt by locals who support themselves by selling looted antiquities.
Following the screening, Professor Carol Bardenstein of the University of Michigan Near Eastern Studies Department will lead a discussion about the historical and ethical issues raised by the film.
