Approval for courses transferred from another institution or UM department toward the English major, English minor, Creative Writing minor and Disability Studies minor must go through the below English Department Transfer Credit Evaluation Process.
English Major
With approval, students may transfer a total of twelve (12) credits from other UM departments and universities towards the English major.
Upon review from an English Advisor, students can satisfy only one (1) core requirement (in Foundations & Methods, Time, or Regions) using any course that’s been transferred to count towards the major.
Exception for Study Abroad: Students can satisfy two core requirements (with two transferred classes) if at least one of the classes transferred is from a study abroad program.
In general, only two 300/400-level creative/expository writing courses (no more than 6 credits) can count toward the English major. This stipulation also applies to transfer credit. Please refer to the major/minor checklist for more information on exceptions to this policy.
A maximum of six credits (including transfer credits) of coursework at the 200-level may be counted toward the English major.
Please Note: By LSA policy, only one course can be shared between a major and a minor.
English Minor and Creative Writing Minor
Students may transfer no more than three (3) credits from other UM departments and universities towards the English minor or Creative Writing minor.
A maximum of six credits (including transfer credits) of coursework at the 200-level may be counted toward the English minor or Creative Writing Minor.
Please Note: By LSA policy, only one course can be shared between a major and a minor.
Disability Studies Minor
Students may transfer no more than six (6) credits from other universities towards the Disability Studies minor.
A total of nine (9) credits from any UM department can count towards the Electives requirement in the Disability Studies minor provided that these courses appear on the approved list of Electives.
Students must take both Intro to Disability Studies (English 216) and Advanced Topics in Disability Studies (English 480) at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor.
Please Note: By LSA policy, only one course can be shared between a major and a minor.
Currently Enrolled UM Students
Check the Transfer Credit Equivalency (TCE) website to see if the class has already been approved for transfer.
If the class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as equivalent credit (i.e. English 270) then no additional steps are required.
If the class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as departmental credit (i.e. English Dept.), please make an appointment with an English advisor and bring a copy of the syllabus for evaluation.
If the class is not listed on the TCE website, submit an evaluation request using the UM Transfer Credit Equivalency Request Form. If you are informed that the class transfers as departmental credit, please make an appointment with an English advisor and bring a copy of the syllabus for evaluation.
Prospective Transfer Students
Check the Transfer Credit Equivalency (TCE) website to see if the class has already been approved for transfer.
If the class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as equivalent credit (i.e. English 270) then no additional steps are required.
If the class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as departmental credit (i.e. English Dept.), admitted transfer students can make an appointment to meet with an English Advisor to review courses for evaluation.
If a class is not listed at all on the TCE this means that no student has ever submitted it for evaluation. Admitted transfer students can set an appointment with an English advisor after they have completed Transfer Student Orientation.
