The aggregated data from Roger Pack’s The Greek and Latin Literary Texts from Greco-Roman Egypt and its successors enable us to move beyond the isolated literary find and to view ancient books at a macro level. I will examine a few populations of textual survivors, especially the Classical tragedians and early Alexandrian poets, for what they can contribute to our understanding of ancient reading patterns and canon formation.
