About
Joseph Choi is an observational astronomer studying quasar winds and feedback, with a particular focus on broad absorption line (BAL) quasar outflows. He uses absorption line diagnostics, photoionization modeling, and spectral synthesis to study these outflows. His interest in BAL quasars spans from cosmic noon to cosmic dawn, from the most energetic winds to the outflows in the earliest quasars (z~7). He is part of the team behind SimBAL, a spectral synthesis method for modeling BAL quasar spectra, and a member of the 4MOST consortium, a wide-field spectroscopic survey, where he is a key member of the 4MOST–Gaia Purely Astrometric Quasar Survey. His research interests include searching for multi-phase/scale wind signatures and the impact of BAL winds on their host galaxies, work that draws on observing programs with Gemini, Magellan, Keck, JWST, ALMA, VLA, and NOEMA, among other facilities.
