Coordinator for Student Success
About
What is your advising philosophy? My advising philosophy is rooted in a Strengths Based approach. I like to highlight and encourage student successes and skills, while also addressing areas for improvement through a motivated, encouraging, and positive attitude. I strive to operate from a holistic advising perspective - looking at the whole student on their journey, not just their grades. I believe that students are capable of much success, and advisors are here to help support them on their academic journey. This looks different for each student - and that's ok!
What was your path to Newnan? After graduating with my bachelor's degree from Michigan State University in 2017, I knew I wanted to continue on to the University of Michigan for my graduate program. I then graduated with my master's degree in social work in 2018, and found myself on a cross-country trek for a new journey! My first role in higher education was at Florida State University as an academic advisor for critically undeclared students (exploratory students in their second or even third year of education). After 2 years at Florida State, I moved back to Michigan and found work at Eastern Michigan University within the College of Arts and Sciences. I worked primarily virtually throughout the pandemic with an inspiring team of advisors, focusing on students in the majors of Psychology, History, Economics, and Philosophy.
Why did you join Newnan? I am looking forward to the opportunities for growth within the Newnan Advising Center to continue my experience witching higher education. To grow professionally with a large and diverse group of advisors is exciting and welcomed. I also feel passionate about supporting the students of my alma mater. Students at the University of Michigan are the Leaders and Best, but even our strongest students can use support sometimes. I feel that I can bring a new perspective and ideas to this incredible team!
Class you loved and why? A class I loved was my first class in graduate school - SWKR504 Diversity, Human Rights, and Justice. I am passionate about learning about those who are different from me - whether it be outward appearance or internal thoughts and feelings. I strive to learn and take in new information every day as a lifelong learner. This course opened my eyes to new experiences and knowledge that I feel I can use to advocate and raise awareness for social justice issues.
Interests and hobbies I also work part-time at Lululemon, and I coach volleyball! Outside of work I enjoy reading, walking outside, drinking coffee, riding my peloton bike, and watching comfort shows/tv.
