Students may request a requirement substitution or policy exception by submitting a petition to the LSA Office of Student Academic Affairs. Students may self-initiate many of the petitions listed below by visiting the Academic requests tab on their MyAdvising page.

Substitutions for General LSA Requirements

Bachelor of Science

Before submitting a petition, please review the Bachelor of Science Eligibility statement on the LSA website. For a list of B.S. eligible courses offered this term, use the LSA Course Guide to search "Bachelor of Science Eligibility" under Special Offerings.

To submit a Petition for Course Substitution for LSA Bachelor of Science Eligibility, please visit the Academic Requests tab on your MyAdvising page.

Distribution

Before submitting a petition, please review the Area Distribution Requirements page, including the Area Distribution Definitions accordion on the LSA website. For a list of Distribution courses offered this term, use the LSA Course Guide to search under Distribution Req.

You may petition for a Distribution exception if you feel that a course you've taken is appropriate for Distribution but does not currently have a designation. The Office of Student Academic Affairs does not overturn or change existing designations. For example, if a course is already labeled as Humanities (HU), we would not consider a request to use it for Social Science (SS).

What should I include in my petition?

Petitions should explain how the course is appropriate for the Distribution category you are choosing as well as how it fits within the general guidelines for a distribution course listed below:

In general, Distribution courses should:

  • Be broad in scope rather than narrowly focused
  • Be accessible to students with no background in the subject
  • Be introductory in nature rather than a specialized upper-level course

These types of courses will not be approved for Distribution:

  • Non-LSA courses
  • Independent studies, experiential, and research courses
  • Courses designed to develop or hone specific skills (e.g. introductory composition and language courses)

How and where do I submit my petition?

To submit a Petition for an Exception to the LSA Distribution Requirement, please visit the Academic Requests tab on your MyAdvising page.

First-Year Writing

The Sweetland Center for Writing oversees both of the College's writing requirements, First-Year Writing and Upper-Level Writing. Any exceptions or special arrancments for either requirement much be approved by Sweetland.

For more information, please visit the First-Year Writing Requirement page on the Sweetland Center for Writing website or contact the Sweetland Center for Writing directly with questions.

Language

Before submitting a petition, please review the information on the Language Substitutions page on the Newnan Academic Advising Center website.

For a list of courses taught at the University of Michigan that meet the Second Language please review the Fourth Term Proficency and Language Requirement Course List on the Language Requirement page of the LSA website.

What should I do if I speak a language that is not taught at U-M?

If you are proficient in a language not taught at the University of Michigan, please review the information on the Languages Not Taught at the University of Michigan page on the Newnan Academic Advising Center website.

Quantitative Reasoning

Before submitting a petition, please review the Quantitative Reasoning Requirement page on the LSA website. Courses that were taken in LSA, in another college or school at U-M, or at another institution will be considered. For a list of QR/1 and QR/2 courses offered this term, use the LSA Course Guide to search "Quantitative Reasoning 1" or "Quantitative Reasoning 2" under Skills Req.

What should I include in my petition?

The “Reasoning” part of the course is critical. It should be a course in which you learned how to use quantitative data to analyze and solve problems, make predictions, and draw conclusions. The course should also include numerical or geometrical representations of real world phenomena. Courses that focus more on mathematical manipulation and computation will not be approved.

How and where do I submit my petition?

To submit a Petition for Course Substitution for LSA Quantitative Reasoning Requirement please visit the Academic Requests tab on your MyAdvising page.

Race and Ethnicity

Before submitting a petition, please review the definitions and guidelines regarding the LSA Race & Ethnicity Requirement. All students are required to complete a course of at least 3 credits which addresses issues arising from racial and ethnic intolerance and is not simply a course on diversity or multiculturalism. You may petition LSA Student Academic Affairs to be allowed to satisfy the R&E requirement with a class that was either taken at another institution or that was taken in LSA but has not been officially designated as R&E.

To be approved as a substitution, a course must spend at least half of the term addressing all of the following Race and Ethnicity Requirement criteria:

  1. The meaning of race, ethnicity, and racism;
  2. Racial and ethnic intolerance and resulting inequality; and
  3. Comparisons of discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion, social class, and/or gender.

How and where do I submit my petition?

To submit a Petition for Course Substitution for the LSA Race & Ethnicity Requirement, please visit the Academic Requests tab on your MyAdvising page.

Upper-Level Writing

The Sweetland Center for Writing oversees both of the College's writing requirements, Upper-Level Writing and First-Year Writing. Any exceptions or special arrancments for either requirement much be approved by Sweetland.

For more information, please visit the Upper-Level Writing Requirement page on the Sweetland Center for Writing website or contact the Sweetland Center for Writing directly with questions.

Exceptions for Major or Minor Requirements

Only departmental advisors can approve substitutions or exceptions for the major or minor. Please contact the department to learn more about their policies and procedures.

Petition for Policy Exception

Auditing a Course

Before submitting a request, please read the information on the Auditing a Course page of the LSA Academic Policies and Procedures website.

Please direct any questions to LSA Student Records at lsa.student.records@umich.edu.

Late Add/Late Drop

After the late add/drop deadline, individual courses may not be added or dropped. However, a student with extenuating circumstances may petition to request a late add or drop. Such requests are rarely granted and only in the case of exceptional circumstances. Petitions for a retroactive drop or add may be submitted no later than one year past the end of the term of the course in question.

Late Drop petitions (following the deadline up until the end of classes) and Retro Late Drops (after classes have ended for the term) are only granted in rare instances and under extraordinary circumstances wherein the reasons:
1. are non-academic; and,
2. occur AFTER the deadline; and,
3. prevent the student from COMPLETING the course; and,
4. the student must be passing the course; and,
5. must include a rationale as to why only the one class was impacted.
All 5 conditions must be met.

To submit a Petition for Exception to the LSA Late Add Deadline or a Petition for an Exception to the Late Drop Deadline, please visit the Academic Requests tab on your MyAdvising page.

Incompletes and Time Extenstions

An Incomplete (denoted on the transcript as “I) is a temporary grade that indicates a course has not yet been completed. An Incomplete is only given in extenuating circumstances by the discretion of the professor for that course.  Full details for Incompletes can be found on the LSA Academic Policies and Procedures page.

Students are required to complete the work for that course by the fourth week of the following semester. To request a time extension, student may submit a Request for LSA Time Extension for an Incomplete by visiting the Academic Requests tab of their MyAdvising Portal.

Please note: these requests require approval of the instructor.

Request for Term Withdrawal

A Term Withdrawal is when students remove themselves from all classes in a semester. The process for withdrawing from the term varies based on the point in the term the withdrawal is requested. Full details for Term Withdrawal can be found on the LSA Academic Policies and Procedures page.

Prior to the term beginning:

If a student has registered for the term, they may disenroll by dropping all courses in Wolverine Access.  Students may also disenroll by contacting the Office of the Registrar prior to the start of the term to disenroll. E-mail the request to wolverineservices@umich.edu (please include full name, id number and term).

Once the term has started:

To submit a Request for LSA Term Withdrawal, please visit the Academic Requests tab of your MyAdvising Page.

After the last day of class:

A term withdrawal after the last day of class is considered a retroactive term withdrawal. Retroactive term withdrawals are rarely granted and only in cases where extenuating non-academic circumstances prevented the student from being able to complete a withdrawal prior to the last day of class.

Students seeking a retroactive term withdrawal should connect with their general academic advisor and email their petition to lsa.academic.policy@umich.edu. Documentation is required.

Questions about any of the policy exceptions noted above may be directed to lsa.academic.policy@umich.edu.
