In general, transfer credit will be granted provided all of the following conditions are met:

  • The course grade is a C or higher when converted to the American scale;
  • The student has not received credit previously for an identical course;
  • The content of the course is similar to courses offered by an appropriate academic unit of the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor.

Current U-M students and incoming transfer students can use the transfer credit equivalency database to see if the class(es) they want to take have already been approved to transfer to U-M. If a course is not listed, students may request an evaluation by completing the Transfer Credit Equivalency Request form prior to enrolling.

Please review the entire LSA Transfer Information & Residency Policy.

Some Policy Highlights

  • If you wish to have a course count towards a major or minor, ask your academic department to make sure this course fulfills major or minor requirements.
  • If you wish to have a course count toward an LSA distribution or skills requirement, ask a General Academic Advisor in the Newnan Academic Advising Center (or CSP, the RC, or Honors if you are a student in one of those programs) to make sure the course fulfills the requirement.
  • You must earn a C or better for the class to transfer, but the actual grade will not be on your U-M transcript and it will not be calculated into your GPA unless you take the class at U-M Dearborn or U-M Flint. Do not take the class pass/fail because it makes things unnecessarily complicated.
  • If you apply to graduate or professional school, those schools usually want to see the transcripts from all of the institutions you attended so they WILL eventually see the grade.
  • There is a difference between SEMESTER and QUARTER schools: If you're taking classes at a school on a quarter system, taking 4 credits there = 2.67 at U-M. U-M is a semester school.
  • Remember that at least 60 credits of the 120 credits required for an LSA degree must be earned in residence, and at least 30 of the last 60 credits for an LSA degree must be earned in residence.
  • You cannot satisfy the Language Requirement by electing out-of-residence credit after you have begun degree enrollment in LSA. Students pursuing an exception to this policy must first receive approval from the language department before electing an out-of-residence language course. Language departments rarely grant exceptions to this policy.
  • After completing the course, an official transcript of the completed transfer work must be sent directly from the institution to U-M. Transcripts sent from students are not accepted as official. The school should submit it electronically by email to transcripts@umich.edu. If that is not possible, the school should mail it to:

University of Michigan Admissions - Credit Evaluation

300 SAB

515 E. Jefferson

Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1316

  • Once the credits are posted to your U-M transcript, follow up with a general advisor or your major/minor advisor to have exceptions entered, if necessary.

We welcome and encourage you to meet with your advisor to review your plan prior to taking a class elsewhere.

How to Apply to Take Classes at Another College

You will need to check with the other school's admissions office and follow their procedures and deadlines. Note that some schools may refer to you as a guest or visiting student. If you will be using the Michigan Uniform Guest Application, Part II of the application is completed by the U-M Registrar's Office. Take your completed application to the Registrar's Office for them to certify and mail. Their office is located at 2200 Student Activities Building. You can also email the form to them at wolverineservices@umich.edu, and for security purposes when doing so, it's recommended that you NOT put your social security number on the form until you get the form returned to you. International students can go to the International Center website for more information.

Distribution

Some transfer courses may automatically fall into the appropriate distribution requirement areas after transfer, whereas others need to be manually entered into the requirement exception system by an academic advisor.

If you have questions about how your transfer credit may count toward distribution requirements, please get in touch with a Newnan advisor.

LSA Transfer Credit Policy Revision Beginning Academic Year 2020-2021

The ongoing effects of COVID-19 on the teaching and learning environment at U-M and other universities require continued adjustments in our LSA transfer credit policy for courses taken at other institutions from the 2020-2021 academic year (Fall 2020, Winter 2021, Spring 2021, and Summer 2021) and beyond. As we acknowledge the flexibility that is needed during this unusual time, beginning September 2020, the following transfer credit policies will apply to all courses taken and transferred into LSA:

  • All courses previously evaluated and currently approved for transfer credit in the Transfer Credit Equivalency (TCE) will continue to be accepted even if the course was taken with a different delivery method (i.e. online) and without any additional verification process for students.
  • All never evaluated courses will continue to be reviewed and approved by the appropriate department to ensure it includes key curricular content that is comparable (including the review of syllabi and exams), but no course should be summarily rejected solely because of the delivery method (i.e. online).

Important Notes:

  • For courses taken in the Winter/Spring/Summer 2020 only, in addition to the above policy updates, and "P" or "S" grade that is noted on a transcript as representing a C- letter grade or higher will be transferred in and accepted as an acceptable grade (subject to usual criteria for degree requirement credit).
  • Any alternate grading (e.g. P or S) that cannot be confirmed to represent the approved letter grade for transfer credit will be awarded departmental credit (regardless if the TCE indicates a direct equivalency) and students will be directed to a particular department for additional review/consideration for direct equivalent credit.

All other LSA Transfer and Residency Policies will still apply.
