Newnan Advising Center; Academic Advisors

Education/Degree:

B.A., Journalism and Mass Communication, Arizona State University

About

What is your advising philosophy?

  1. One student at a time to assure best attention given to each individual situation
  2. Investigative advising means doing research prior to an appointment and open ended questions so as to never assume a situation is the same.
  3. Strive to learn more as an academic advisor in professional development, from your colleagues and listening to your students

What was your path to Newnan?

I began working in higher education at my alma mater, the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, running a living-learning community. After 9 years in that position, I transitioned to becoming an academic advisor. For the last 7 years, I have advised students at the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence also at Arizona State University.

Why did you join Newnan?

Newnan gives me the precious opportunity to meet and assist students with diverse interests and backgrounds. I am eager to hear what lead students to University of Michigan and their goals. Newnan Center is very welcoming and committed to quality for their staff which is what UM students deserve!

Class you loved and why?

Despite my focus on Broadcasting classes, I always preferred my English and Creative Writing courses. The two I recall the most fondly were "Creative Writing" and "The Bible as Literature" I originally started college at Eastern Michigan because at the time they were the only Michigan school that offered Creative Writing as a major. Like many others, I eventually changed major but my passion has always been Creative Writing.

Interests and hobbies:

Record collecting, antique and thrift store shopping, attending concerts, journaling, reading and traveling to Canada. I love dogs, my Corgi Elvis and I love to explore the parks of Michigan!
