Still have questions about our scholarships? We're here to help! Below are answers to a few of the most common questions we receive from students.

How do I apply for scholarships from the College of LSA?

Simply follow this link to complete our general application. When selecting which scholarships you'd like to be considered for, check all boxes that are applicable to your academic goals. Some scholarships are only awarded certain times of year, but be sure to select them anyway. Later, when that scholarship's application window opens, you will be prompted to answer a few additional questions to complete the application.

How do I know if I’m eligible for a scholarship from the College of LSA?

A list of basic eligibility requirements for all scholarships can be found on our eligibility page. Some scholarships (like those for study abroad and internships) require that students meet additional criteria. Details can be found on each scholarship's individual page, and they are also listed on the online application.

Can I get a scholarship if I’m a dual degree student with LSA?

Only students who have officially declared a Multiple Dependent Degree Program (MDDP) with LSA can receive an LSA scholarship.

MDDP students who receive an LSA scholarship will be required to complete both degrees or forfeit their scholarship. If the LSA degree is not going to be completed for any reason, please contact us immediately so that we can work with you. Dual degree students who drop their LSA degree may be billed for the full scholarship amount, beginning from the first semester that the MDDP began. And non-payment of this bill may result in a hold on the student’s diploma, or a block on the request for an official transcript until the amount due is paid.

Can I receive a scholarship if I'm an LSA minor?

No. Scholarships are only available for students pursuing a major in an LSA degree program.

What if I receive an additional scholarship outside of the LSA Scholarship Office?

Congratulations! Please send two emails, one to notify us and another to the Office of Financial Aid, as soon as possible. We will update your financial aid package to reflect the change.

What other financial resources are available if I don't qualify for an LSA Scholarship?

For students who do not qualify for LSA Scholarships or are searching for additional funding, we recommend visiting the University of Michigan Library's funding resource guide.

If I’m on a four-year renewable scholarship, do I need to fill out my FAFSA each year?

Yes. A new FAFSA must be completed each year.

If I transfer to the School of Business/College of Engineering/etc., will my scholarship transfer?

Unfortunately, no. If you accepted an LSA scholarship, it only remains effective during the time you are enrolled in a degree program within the College of LSA. If you transfer to another school or college, you must contact us prior to the beginning of the academic term the transfer will be in effect. If you do not contact our office to remove the scholarship, you may be billed retroactively for each semester you accept funds while not enrolled in a degree-seeking LSA program.

Can I receive a scholarship if I am enrolled less than full-time?

LSA scholarship funds will not disburse to a student enrolled in less than 12 credits. Some exceptions may apply for graduating seniors who need less than 12 credit hours to graduate. Please contact us if that's the case.

What happens if I was enrolled full-time, but I dropped to part-time during the semester?

Students who drop below full-time (12 credit hours) will typically have their scholarship amounts reduced. Send us an email explaining your unique situation so we can help assist you.

How and when can I thank the donor of my scholarship?

"Thank you" requirements can vary depending on the scholarship. You will receive an email from our office with detailed instructions when it is time to complete this requirement. Timing can vary based on the type of scholarship, but we typically will not ask for you to complete a thank you requirement until some time after your scholarship has been awarded.

What happens to my scholarship if I need to take time off from school?

If you are a scholarship student and need to take time off of school for any reason, please contact us as soon as possible to set up an appointment to discuss your options. Unless you are taking a leave from school because of a medical condition, your scholarship typically will not carry forward, and scholarship eligibility for the term when you are not enrolled will be forfeit.

If I’m on a four-year renewable scholarship, how do I complete my service hours?

Please visit the Scholarship Service Program page for service hour requirements.

If I’m on a four-year renewable scholarship, what happens if my GPA falls below the minimum cumulative GPA requirement?

We want to help support you financially and academically. Contact Katherine Weathers as soon as possible to set up an appointment to discuss your situation. Please also meet with your academic advisor to complete the Scholarship Evaluation Form. This form will help you create a plan to get back on track. Bring a copy of the completed form when you meet with Katherine.
