LSA Scholarships can help get you there! Last year we awarded over 1.6 million dollars. We have helped hundreds of LSA students realize their dreams of international study. We want to help you too!

What does the scholarship cover?

An LSA Scholarship supports LSA students who study abroad through a Center for Global and Intercultural Study (CGIS) program. All of our study abroad scholarships are donor funded and based on financial need. Scholarship funds can help cover the cost of attendance and travel.

Amounts and Duration

Study Abroad Scholarships range from $1,000 to $10,000. Because program costs vary, our Scholarship Coordinators review each application individually. Award amounts are based on specific programs and a student's level of financial need.

Scholarships are granted for only one study abroad program per term. Students may apply and receive additional scholarships for separate terms and academic years. Priority is given to students studying abroad for the first time.

Application Deadline

Application deadlines vary depending on the program term. Students should apply at the same time they apply for their CGIS program. If you are unsure which program you will attend, you can apply for multiple program scholarships. The scholarship award will apply to whichever program you enroll in.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for an LSA Study Abroad Scholarship, a student:

  • Must be an undergraduate currently enrolled full-time and pursuing a degree program (or MDDP) in the College of LSA. Seniors are eligibile to apply.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (i.e. possess a green card).
  • Must apply for and receive need-based support through the Office of Financial Aid.
  • Must have a current FAFSA and CSS profile on file with the Office of Financial Aid (OFA) and must renew their FAFSA annually.
  • Must be participating in an LSA Study Abroad Program through the Center for Global and Intercultural Study (CGIS) and be listed on their program term's roster.
  • Must complete a minimum of 67% of all credit hours each semester. If students do not successfully complete these requirements, their scholarship will be retroactively canceled, and it will impact their eligibility to receive scholarship support in the future.

How do I apply?

Step one: We recommend meeting with a CGIS advisor to determine which CGIS Study Abroad Program best suits you. Fill out a formal application on M-Compass.

Step two: Complete the LSA Study Abroad Scholarship Application for the specific program you have applied for (either Winter, GIEU, GCC, Spring/Summer, or Fall/Academic Year) Applications in draft mode can be updated until you click submit. Please note the program applications are open for a limited time and deadlines are listed above.

Step three: Once your Study Abroad Scholarship application has been submitted, you will receive an email confirmation. Please contact our office if significant changes are to be made, or if you choose to withdraw your application. Please know: scholarship award decisions are made based on the program in which you are enrolled and your Cost of Attendance (as determined by the Office of Financial Aid) at the time of review. Please see award notification dates listed above.

Financial Aid for Study Abroad

For more information about the types of financial aid that apply to your specific program, please reach out to the Office of Financial Aid (OFA) with any questions you have, or submit a Financial Aid Estimate. They can give you tailored advice based on your unique situation and your existing financial aid package.Their office is located in the Student Activities Building (2500 SAB), and they can be reached by phone at 734.763.6600.

If you qualify for need-based aid, the majority of your funding will come from your UM Grants and Federal Aid. The LSA Study Abroad Schoalrship aims to fill unmet need after all other financial aid (including loan offers) is applied to your aid package.

Have general questions? Follow this link to more information on financial aid for study abroad from the Office of Financial Aid.

When will my Study Abroad Scholarship disburse?

Once a student accepts their award in the application portal, Study Abroad Scholarship funds are applied to the student's university account for the academic term they will study abroad. The award will first pay tuition and fees. Any funds remaining will be disbursed as a refund during the standard OFA disbursement timeline, usually 10 days before the start of the study abroad term. Student refunds are anticipated to become available the week before the start of your travel term.

What if I have to pay program fees before my Scholarship funds are available?

We encourage students who have early payment deadlines (prior to their financial aid refunds) to speak with their study abroad program providers to see if they will agree to a payment deferral for students who can provide a Financial Aid Waiver form. This is a form that can be filled out by the UM Office of Financial Aid verifying that you will be receiving financial aid during your study abroad term and that it will be released at the beginning of that term.

LSA Scholarships cannot review applications nor award schoalrships earlier than the posted timelines. If your program requires you pay early deposits and fees, please to not rely on anticipated funding from your LSA Schoalrship application.

Can I receive a Spring/Summer Study Abroad Scholarship and an LSA Internship Scholarship ?

Students considering multiple spring/summer experiences such as a study abroad program or an internship. If you have questions about funding multiple spring/summer experiences, please contact us or make an appointment with our office to discuss your options.

What if I do not qualify for this scholarship? Is there anywhere else I could look for support?

The following are other scholarship opportunities that may be of interest to university/college students. Inclusion of any external scholarship opportunities is intended only as a resource for students and does not express or imply any university involvement with, or endorsement of, the external program.

If you do not meet the qualifications for the LSA Internship Scholarship, we encourage you to check out International Institute Funding and CGIS list of additional scholarships. If you have declared a major, we recommend checking in with your home department to see if they have any funding options. The U-M Library Funding Guide for Students may also have additional resources.
