Four-Year Renewable Scholarships

What is a Renewable Scholarship?

Each year, the LSA Scholarships Office awards Four-Year Renewable Scholarships to approximately 300 first-year incoming LSA students. These scholarships are only awarded to first-year students and are based on a student's undergraduate admissions application, academic achievements, and their financial need (as demonstrated by their FAFSA and CSS profile).

By completing this one application, students will be considered for all scholarships they are eligible for through the LSA Scholarships Office.

LSA students are eligible to apply for the Four-Year Renewable Scholarship once they have been admitted. Login access will become available as students receive their admission letters for Early Decision, Early Action and Regular Decision.

What does the scholarship cover?

For qualified first-year incoming LSA students, the Four-Year Renewable Scholarship helps to cover the cost of attendance for Fall and Winter terms.

Amounts and Duration

Award amounts vary for each scholarship. The average award is $9,000. All Four-Year Renewable Scholarships are intended to cover four consecutive years of undergraduate study. As long as a student maintains eligibility by completing their requirements, the scholarship automatically renews each fall term for that academic year.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a Four-Year Renewable Scholarship, a student must:

Be a first-year incoming student, admitted to an undergraduate degree program in the College of LSA.*
Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (i.e. possess a green card).
Apply for and receive need-based support through the Office of Financial Aid. Exception: students applying only for merit scholarships.
Have a current FAFSA and completed CSS profile with the Office of Financial Aid (OFA)
Exception: students considered only for merit scholarships.
Be enrolled (or intend to enroll) full-time (12 credit hours or more) each term.

*You only need to be admitted to the College of LSA in order to qualify or apply for LSA Scholarships.

Application Timeline

The annual deadline to apply is April 15. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Applying early increases your chances of being matched with a scholarship.

All scholarship notices are sent before of May 1, LSA's enrollment deadline.

How do I apply?

Students must be admitted to the College of Literature, Science and the Arts in order to apply.

A link to our LSA Scholarship portal will appear when we start accepting Four-Year Rewable Scholarship applications for the 2026-27 academic year.

How to log in to the LSA Scholarships Portal

Reminder: The complete process to gain login access may take 24-48 hours.

Check Your Login Details: Make sure you are using your Friend Account ID and password to log in. If you forgot your Friend Account Password reset it here. (Students must use the same email they used when applying to UM.)

Verify Your Account: Ensure that you have completed all necessary steps in Wolverine Access to authorize your Friend Account for accessing university systems.

Wait for Account Verification: Once your account is verified, it may take 24-48 hours for the information to update in the application system.

Troubleshoot Login Issues: Clear your browser's cache. Try logging in with a different browser.

If Problems Persist: Contact LSA IT for help at 734.615.0100. Have your UMID ready.

If you recently enrolled: Use your new uniqname and password. There might be a delay if you've just paid your enrollment deposit.

Other Four-Year Renewable Scholarships

The Gloria Wille Bell and Carlos R. Bell Scholarship Program (External Application Required)

The Bell Scholarship application period is now closed for the 2025-2026 academic year.

The Bell Scholarship is intended for first-year U-M students who show exceptional academic talent, reside in an eligible geographic area, and are pursuing an undergraduate, science-related degree in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts or in the College of Engineering.

Bell Scholars receive a renewable scholarship for four years of undergraduate study. Annual renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic progress. In-state students are awarded $10,000 per year. Out-of-state students are awarded $20,000 per year.

In order to be considered for this scholarship, students must meet full eligibility criteria and complete a separate application on the Bell Scholarship website.

The Alvin M. and Arvella D. Bentley Scholarship

The Alvin M. and Arvella D. Bentley Foundation established the Bentley Scholarship Program in 1983 to recognize and encourage public service in students from the state of Michigan.

The Bentley Scholarship is a scholarship awarded to incoming LSA students who are Michigan residents, demonstrated high academic achievement and leadership during high school, and are interested in a career in public service. Each year, 6–8 incoming LSA students are invited to campus to interview to receive this award. These students are selected from the pool of first-year admits. Of these candidates, 2 recipients are selected to receive the Bentley Scholarship.

Bentley Scholarship recipients receive a renewable scholarship for four consecutive years of undergraduate study in the amount of $15,000 per year.

Only students who are nominated for this award will be notified. Students who are not selected for this award will still be considered for all other Four-Year Renewable Scholarships they are qualified for.
