Speaker: Joseph Marsano (University of Chicago)The complexity of string vacua can make it difficult to explore their low energy physics in a systematic way. It often happens, however, that the charged degrees of freedom localize on branes that see only a part of the compactification geometry. This enables a 'bottom-up' approach to the study of string vacua that takes its inspiration from the success of effective field theory methods in particle physics. In this talk, we describe the application of this approach to F-theory compactifications, which are perhaps the most promising for realizing Grand Unification, and the general lessons it is teaching us about low energy physics across the F-theory landscape.
