Giving Opportunities

The Hub helps Michigan’s liberal arts and sciences students answer the all-important question: what doors does my LSA degree open? From coaching, career preparation courses, and workshops to employer recruiting, internships and experiential learning opportunities, career networking and mentoring with alums — we provide all LSA students with tools to explore career paths so they can create a purposeful vision for their future. Then, we support them with planning their next steps so they can confidently pursue this vision as they launch into life beyond college.

The Hub helps students plan their tomorrow, today.

Your Gifts at Work

“The Hub did a really good job of exposing me to different outlets so I could find opportunities. One such opportunity was an Energy and Sustainability flash internship the Hub hosted in Houston for a group of students who visited BP, Shell, the City of Houston, and a nonprofit partner called the Buffalo Bayou. It was such a fast-paced, super immersive experience, more so than a typical four-month internship. I got a really good taste of what the energy industry is like and a really deep understanding of how to work in a professional capacity.” —Taylor Lind, 2020 Grad in Economics and Environmental Science with a minor in Sustainability

Giving Opportunities

Hub Student Journey Fund - 338734

Just like fingerprints, no two student journeys at LSA are identical. For some students, it's shaped by meeting alums in fields and careers that are entirely unexpected and unfamiliar to them, so much so that it helps them refine their interests and choose a major. For others, it’s getting their first-ever professional headshot so that they can better catch recruiters’ attention online after graduating.

But for all LSA students, the Hub serves to propel their self-discovery, career exploration, and professional development forward in a true liberal arts approach: pursuing career paths that give them purpose and meaning.

Gifts of all sizes to the Student Journey Fund make it possible for students to gain access to a whole host of transformative opportunities like:

  • Powerful networking with alums across locations, identities, industries, and majors through LSA Connect, the college’s online LSA community
  • Long-term mentoring with deeply invested alum mentors through the LSA Mentorship Program
  • Free, quality headshots through the Hub’s Professional Headshot Booth
  • Door-opening connections with employers through recruiting events and workshops that prepare them to engage with these potential employers
  • Individualized coaching with the Hub’s career coaches who support them with setting professional goals and identifying steps to realize those goals
  • Deeper career exploration through the Hub’s Applied Liberal Arts courses: Positioning Yourself for a Success Internship, Undergraduate Internship Course, and Putting Your Education to Work
  • 24/7 accessible online career resources like resumé builders, cover letter tailoring, interview preparation, job search tools, and more than help students upskill and build basic professional competencies

These experiences are not only vital to decision-making, but it helps students work on the most important projects of their lives: developing their professional identity.

Hub Innovation Fund - 327384

The LSA Opportunity Hub doesn’t just provide students with opportunities. We’re also a hub in the true sense: like spokes on a wheel, we’re the center point that connects the dots of a student’s college experience at U-M — classes, co-curricular activities, internships, volunteer experiences, student clubs, and more. We help students understand the underlying connections between these things so they can uncover what lies beneath their surface: their interests, values, and aspirations.

Student Internships Fund - 326045

The Hub is committed to ensuring that all students are able to participate in transformative internship opportunities, regardless of their financial situation. In order to provide this access, funds are needed for work experiences that seem out of reach. Gifts of all sizes to the Hub’s Student Internships Fund help students embark on not only internships but other experiential learning opportunities, like a summer-long job shadow with an orthopedic surgery unit or a one-week externship at a Silicon Valley tech start-up.
Through these opportunities, students are equipped with first-hand insights to make informed decisions about their futures and gain twenty-first century skills, on-the-job connections, and tangible work experiences that make them even more hireable upon graduating.
