Symposium - Boris Pasternak's Dr. Zhivago

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the publication of a Russian-language edition of Dr. Zhivago by U-M Press, the University of Michigan Library has organized an examination of the writing of this classic work, the controversy surrounding its publication in Russian andother languages in the context of the Cold War, its publication in Ann Arbor by U-M Press, and poetry of this work within the novel. Sponsored by the University of Michigan Library with generous support from Toby Holtzman and the U-M Center for Russian and East European Studies.

Speakers include Kathryn Beam, Librarian, U-M Special Collections; Janet Crayne, Head, Slavic and East European Division, U-M Library; Toby Holtzman on collecting Pasternak; Michael Makin, Associate Professor, U-M Department of Slavic Languages & Literatures; and Dmitry Urnov, member of the A.M. Gorky Institute of World Literature, Moscow and retired professor of Russian literature, Adelphi University. David Lean's 1965 film Dr. Zhivago will be screened on Thursday, March 26 at 7 pm in the Hatcher Graduate Library Gallery.
