SSW Requirements

SSW Submajor Requirements

Students have the option of adding a submajor in Sociology & Social Work to their Sociology major. Courses in the SSW submajor offer students a substantive and cohesive curriculum relating to issues at the intersection of sociology and social work.

Elective Credits

As a part of the Sociology Major elective credits, students must complete at least 12 credit hours with a C- or better from the below list of approved courses.

• A minimum of 8 credits of which must be elected in the SSW submajor at the 300-level or above

Policies & Credit Limits

A maximum of 6 credits in the major may come from SOC 394 SURO, SOC 395, and SOC 396.

Students majoring in Sociology with a submajor in Sociology and Social Work are not permitted to elect a minor in Community Action and Social Change or double major in Social Theory and Practice.

Did you know the Sociology major has a partnership with the School of Social Work?

Sociology majors in the Sociology & Social Work sub-plan have the option of applying for admission to U-M’s MSW program in winter term of their junior year. Students do not need to complete all major/sub-plan requirements before applying.

Admitted students start taking MSW courses in their senior year – two courses in fall term and two courses in winter term. In addition, the required major course, SOC 310, fulfills an MSW research methods requirement. The MSW courses taken during senior year count as undergraduate college-wide electives, which help students to reach 120 total credits. MSW courses do not count as major/sub-plan requirements.

When students begin graduate school in the School of Social Work, requirements are essentially “shaved off” because they already completed the coursework as undergraduates, saving time and money in the MSW program!
