Description of research project:
Social movements urging the U.S. government to make right on its history of forcibly sterilizing the “unfit” have resulted in financial compensation programs, official monuments, and formal apologies in nine states. These programs are insufficiently documented in the existing academic literature. Because this dynamic is also relevant to other social movements–like reparations for slavery or Native American genocide–addressing its omission from the social movements literature fills an important gap. These programs are mostly documented in local news articles, which are stored on a website called Nexis Uni.
Description of work that will be assigned to research assistants:
The Nexis Uni search yielded over 3000 results, many of which are not actually related to eugenics redress. Students will read all news articles identified via the Nexis Uni search to remove irrelevant articles. They will keep track of which articles are actually about eugenics redress and which are irrelevant in a spreadsheet.
