LJSC Sub-major


As a part of the Sociology Major elective credits, students must complete at least 12 credit hours with a C- or better from the following list of approved courses.

  • A minimum of 8 credits of which must be elected in the LJSC submajor at the 300-level or above

  • SOC 354: Law and Society
  • SOC 368: Criminology
  • SOC 391: Justice in Action
  • SOC 422: Latin America
  • SOC 461: Social Movements: Political Protest and Collective Resistance
  • SOC 465: Sociology of Deviance: From Sin to Sickness
  • SOC 468: Crime & Justice: Inside Out Prison Exchange
  • SOC 476: Sociology of Bioethics
  • SOC 480: Environmental Justice
  • Approved topics in SOC 295, 495, 394 (SURO), 395 (Independent Study), 396 (Internship)

Policies & Credit Limits

A maximum of 6 credits in the submajor may come from Experiential Learning or Independent Study style courses. This includes but is not limited to SOC 225, 325, 391, 394, 395, 396, 468, and 488.

Students majoring in Sociology with a submajor in Law, Justice, and Social Change are not permitted to elect a minor in Crime & Justice or History of Law and Policy.

Sociology Major with LJSC Sub-major – Example 4-Year Plan

 First-Year – Fall Term:

 • Prerequisite to declare - SOC 100 or 102

 First-Year – Winter Term:

 • SOC 200-level or higher elective (3 credits)

 Sophomore Year – Fall Term:

 • SOC 200-level or higher elective from approved LJSC list (4 credits)
 

 Sophomore Year – Winter Term:

 • SOC 210 or STATS 250 (4 credits)

 Declare Sociology Major with LJSC sub-major before registration

 Junior Year – Fall Term:

 • SOC 305 (4 credits)

 • SOC 300-level or higher elective (3 credits)

 Junior Year – Winter Term:

 • SOC 310 (4 credits)

 • SOC 300-level or higher elective (3 credits)

 Senior Year – Fall Term:

 • SOC 300-level or higher elective from approved LJSC list (4 credits) 

 Apply for Graduation and submit Release Request

 Senior Year – Winter Term:

 • SOC 300-level or higher elective from approved LJSC list (4 credits)
