Have you secured an internship and do you wish to earn college credit?
Apply for SOC 396 "Internship for Credit" through the Sociology Department!
Sociology majors and minors can earn 1 credit per internship for relevant experiences paired with thoughtful sociological inquiry. The credit is earned not necessarily by the time spent in the internship setting, but by crafting an academic essay connecting a significant experience “in the field” to coursework within the department.
- SOC 396 is graded as credit/no credit (CR/NC).
- The course may be repeated for a second credit hour but only if the internships are in different settings.
- A maximum of 6 credits in a soc major, submajor, or minor may come from SOC 394 SURO, SOC 395, and SOC 396.
- SOC 396 will count as elective credit toward the Sociology major but can be reviewed for the LJSC, SHM, and SSW minors/subplans upon request.
Application Deadline:
You must apply at least three weeks before the start of the internship, or at the latest by the second Friday of the semester. Credit will not be given retroactively for an internship that has already been completed.
If approved, you will receive an electronic override to register for SOC 396 (1 credit).
Students must register for the course before the regular LSA Drop/Add period ends.
After the Intership:
Upon completion of the internship, students must submit the following materials via email to SocAdvisor@umich.edu:
- A 9-12 page paper analyzing the internship experience using sociological concepts and ideas. This document should include: a) two to three pages of narrative about the goals and objectives of the internship and your role and duties during the internship; b) seven to ten pages analytically examining how and why the internship experience advanced your understanding of a sociological concept or theory (e.g. social reproduction, social network relations, discrimination) or field of research (e.g. LJSC, SHM, race and ethnic relations, family, formal organizations, social movements). This portion of the essay must cite five to seven scholarly sources.
- A letter from the internship supervisor confirming your internship and briefly describing your role as an intern. This letter must arrive as a direct email to SocAdvisor@umich.edu.
These materials are due on the last day of classes in the semester in which the student is registered.
Occasionally, an internship organization will require that you produce a memo on U-M letterhead stating that you are eligible to receive academic credit for an internship. The Sociology advisor can create and sign this letter for students when needed. However, the University of Michigan will not enter hold-harmless agreements with any organization at which a student is interning.
