In Memory of Katherine Luke: Katherine Pavelka Luke (1974-2009) entered University of Michigan’s Joint Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Social Work and Sociology in 2003 with a BA in Women and Gender Studies and Psychology and a minor in sociology from Macalester College, and an MSW and MA in Public Affairs from the University of Minnesota. While at UM she earned a Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies. She was active in graduate student life including starting student workshops in Sociology, holding offices in Social Work’s Doctoral Student Organization and participating in the Graduate Employees’ Organization. She won multiple awards and research grants to study gender, race, and sexual violence. Katherine completed her Ph.D. in August of 2009 and was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer shortly after. Katherine passed away on September 12, 2009. Survivors include her husband, Michael Pryplesh, and young children Nicky and Ali.
