David Dick, PhD Philosophy ‘09, recently passed away in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He was 43 years old.
Born in 1979, David Dick received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Utah. He then went on to study philosophy at the University of Michigan, earning his PhD in 2009.
He has spent most of his career at the University of Calgary. He was an Associate Professor of Philosophy, as well as a Fellow in the Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business at the Haskayne School of Business. Prior to this, he was Chair of Business Ethics at Calgary.
David’s research focused on the philosophy of money, business ethics, and social and political philosophy. Specific questions and research topics included justice and wealth distribution, individual ethics of wealth and charity, and the nature of money. In 2015, he was the recipient of the McCaig-Killam Teaching Award, the highest teaching honor at the University of Calgary.
Dick was also involved with a significant amount of public facing work. He served as coordinator for the Integrity Network, a group of ethics professionals from corporate, academic, and non-profit sectors. He worked to showcase and distribute philosophy in a variety of mainstream media outlets. Calgary’s Avenue Magazine selected him as one of their Top 40 under 40 in 2017.
