The Department of Philosophy offers a major, as well as an honors major leading to a senior thesis, for qualified upper-class students. The department offers a minor with a choice of two "streams." Philosophy also participates in the Philosophy, Politics and Economics and Cognitive Science programs.
Recommended Coursework
Prospective and current majors and minors are advised that selected intermediate-level courses are intended as bridges to more advanced offerings at the 400-level. The bridge courses fall into different categories:
- Logic: 303 (Symbolic Logic) and 305 (Introduction to Formal Methods)
- Mind and Reality: 345 (Language and Mind), 381 (Science and Objectivity), and 383 (Knowledge and Reality)
- Value Theory: PPE 300 (Intro to Political Economy), PHIL 361 (Ethics), PHIL 366 (Political Philosophy), and PHIL 367 (19th century social and political philosophy)
