We are pleased to announce that Irene Soto Marín will be coming to Michigan this fall to fill a joint appointment as an assistant professor in Classical Studies and assistant curator at the Kelsey Museum.

Irene received her PhD from the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University in 2018 with a dissertation titled, "The Economic Integration of a Late Roman Province: Egypt from Diocletian to Anastasius.” Most recently, she has held the position of junior assistant professor of ancient history at the University of Basel, Switzerland. Her research seeks to understand the nature of Graeco-Roman economies through interdisciplinary research in numismatics, archaeology, and ancient documents.

With her background in numismatics, archaeological fieldwork, and teaching, as well as her current and future research aims and enthusiasm for museum exhibition and outreach, we are confident that Irene will be an important addition to our faculty curators and a strong asset to both the Department of Classical Studies and the Kelsey Museum.
