The Kelsey Museum mourns the loss of Richard Redding, who passed away on May 22, 2023. A research scientist at the Kelsey since 2012, Richard was a significant figure in the archaeological community. The impact of his mentorship, teaching, and research is profound and far-reaching. We extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones.
A scholarship for graduate students has been established to honor Dr. Redding’s legacy. Please see the message below from his family to learn more.

Dear Friends, Family, and Colleagues,
We would like to thank you for your concern, care, and connection over the last few weeks. We have both been humbled by the outpouring of love and support and touched by the stories of how much he meant to so many people. We know that many of you are hoping to come together to celebrate Richard’s life and legacy, and we are planning to hold a memorial in Ann Arbor early next year. We will be in touch to share the details when we have them.
In the meantime, we would like to share information about a scholarship that has been endowed in Richard’s name. While his loss is hard to accept, we have been comforted to hear the amazing things that have been written about him and his legacy. We are sharing the link HERE so that you can read some of these stories as well. You can also add your comments on the memorial wall on this site.
For those of you who want to contribute to this scholarship fund, please know that it is a qualified charitable donation, and for those over a certain age, it can come from an IRA.
Thank you for your love and support.
With gratitude,
Cheri and Alexis Redding
