Gallery Images for "Randal Stegmeyer: Exposing the Past"

University of Michigan Library photographer Randal Stegmeyer has long served as photographer of choice for the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. Randal’s images feature prominently in our publications, electronic media, and promotional material and have come to shape how our artifacts are seen by scholars, students, and a wider public.

This exhibition, a celebration of Stegmeyer's career in photography intended to coincide with his retirement, was to run from May 1, 2020, through January 3, 2021. However, like so many other things, these plans were upended in March when the COVID pandemic forced us to close our doors.

The online version of the exhibition opened on on May 1, 2020. The physical exhibition—and indeed the entire Kelsey Museum—remained closed until October 20 of that year, when members of the U-M community (students, faculty, and staff) were again able to visit our galleries by scheduling their visits through Eventbrite. The run of the exhibition was eventually extended twice: first through early July 2021, and then through January 2, 2022. This second extention allowed the wider public time to view the exibition as our galleries reopened to all audiences in June of 2021.

Presented here are photographs of the exhibition taken by Austin Thomason of Michigan Photography in early November 2020.
