Located in the heart of Rome, the Temple of Divus Iulius was the center of the cult of Julius Caesar, who was made a god after his assassination in 44 BCE. Imperial cults like this proved a powerful propaganda tool, allowing later emperors to legitimize themselves by claiming descent from a divine ancestor.
