The emperor Vespasian, shown here, began construction on a large amphitheater in 72 CE. After his death, the project was continued by his sons, Titus and Domitian, before being completed by the latter in 80 CE. The Flavian Amphitheater converted a large portion of Rome from private, imperial land to public space.
