Guided Tours and Classroom Visits

Let us take your students on a tour of the ancient world! Tours are led by our knowledgeable docents and staff and can be customized to align with your course’s curriculum.

University tours are available Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (with tours starting no later than 3:00 PM). For U-M courses scheduled after 3:00 PM, we can make special arrangements—please be in touch at least three weeks before your desired visit date.

Programs and courses from both U-M and other colleges and universities are also welcome to schedule tours on weekends from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Using our permanent galleries, we can explore these themes and more:

  • History and development of writing
  • Growing up and childhood
  • The archaeology of everyday life
  • Museum ethics (collecting and displaying objects)
  • Ritual and magic
  • Visual literacy and storytelling
  • Household production and specialized technologies
  • Medicine and healing
  • Trade and connectivity
  • Diet and food production
  • Gender and sexuality

If you are unable to visit the museum in person, let us bring Kelsey to you! Our classroom visits are likewise led by content experts and customizable to meet your course’s curriculum needs.

Class visits are available 8:30 AM–5:00 PM; at least three weeks of lead time is required.

To schedule a guided tour, contact Shannon Ness (university programs coordinator) at snness@umich.edu. Please include relevant details about your course, your desired date/time for a tour, and any preferences on thematic focuses for your visit.
