The University of Michigan’s Museum of Zoology (UMMZ) named Ph.D. student Kristen Wacker the recipient of the annual Donald W. Tinkle scholarship award. Associate Chair, EEB Museums, Hernán López-Fernández, says the award to Wacker is “in recognition of her excellent research, teaching and service activities during her graduate program.” The scholarship is intended to assist recipients in completing their doctoral research.

"I am extremely honored and grateful to receive the Tinkle award," said Wacker.  "What an incredible list of names to be joining!"

The Tinkle Scholarship is given by a committee in consideration of Professor Tinkle’s legacy. Recipients are selected in light of Dr. Tinkle’s special qualities as an evolutionary biologist, and his powerful and positive influence at U-M.

Dr. Tinkle joined U-M in 1965 as a Professor and Curator of Reptiles and Amphibians. He taught Comparative Anatomy, and two new courses that he designed with colleagues: Evolutionary Biology of the Vertebrates and Evolutionary Ecology. Dr. Tinkle became the Director of the Museum of Zoology in 1975 and served until his death in 1980.
