The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology is saddened to share the passing of Professor Emeritus Brian Arthur Hazlett.


Professor Hazlett joined the faculty at Michigan in 1966 and retired in 2006. During his distinguished career, he was widely regarded as the leading expert on hermit crabs and conducted pioneering early research on the behavioral responses of crayfish to chemical cues. Professor Hazlett’s dedication to scholarship and mentorship shaped generations of scientists within EEB.
He served the department as Associate Chair and Chair on several occasions, and was interim Director of the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) for two years. His collaborative spirit, leadership, and passion for discovery left a lasting impact on both his colleagues and the broader scientific community.
